SKILLED FORCE · CRAFT & REGIONAL CAPABILITY ATLAS

Find the skill where it actually lives.

India does not have one uniform construction workforce. It has professional institutions, industrial centres, craft communities, training ecosystems, family workshops and regional material cultures. Vasundhara will map these as capability pools, then match them to project requirements. A regional note is a sourcing lead—not a claim that only that region can produce the skill.

01 · HOW TO READ THE ATLAS

We are mapping capability, not stereotypes.

The correct question is not “which state has good craftsmen?” It is “where can we find people who can reliably execute this material, process or outcome?” Every cluster below therefore needs validation through work samples, references, practical tests, site trials and current availability.

Evidence

Show the work

Portfolio, completed installations, references, photographs, sample panels, test pieces and documented site outcomes outrank titles alone.

Competency

Test the hand

For craft and trade roles, define a practical task: set out, cut, joint, lay, finish, repair, fabricate or install to a measurable tolerance.

Deployment

Test the reality

Check mobility, accommodation, crew size, tools, material familiarity, language, lead time, supervision needs and ability to work to the project's programme.

02 · PRIORITY REGIONAL CAPABILITY POOLS

The first sourcing map.

These are initial capability leads for Vasundhara's research network, grounded in government handicrafts classifications, artisan databases, craft-cluster documentation and recognised skills ecosystems.

Rajasthan · Gujarat

Stone, lime, surface craft

  • Stone carving and architectural stonework
  • Marble/inlay and decorative stone processes
  • Lime and traditional surface expertise to investigate through local practitioners
  • Metal and wood craft interfaces
Vasundhara test: sample stone detailing, edge/joint accuracy, surface finish and ability to interpret a detail drawing.
Uttar Pradesh

Stone inlay, wood & specialist craft

  • Agra marble inlay
  • Saharanpur/Nagina wood craft ecosystems
  • Stone and decorative surface workshops
  • Craft-to-furniture fabrication potential
Vasundhara test: produce a small approved sample from a supplied pattern, then price and schedule repeat production.
Madhya Pradesh

Central Indian craft network

  • Stone carving
  • Wood carving
  • Bell-metal and metal craft
  • Terracotta/pottery and regional craft production
Vasundhara test: distinguish decorative craft from construction-grade production capability; verify tooling, repeatability and installation experience.
Odisha · Chhattisgarh

Stone, metal, wood & vernacular craft

  • Stone carving and sculpture traditions
  • Brass/bell-metal and metalworking
  • Wood carving
  • Cane, bamboo and natural-fibre work
Vasundhara test: commission a prototype architectural element and assess dimensional control, joinery, finishing and transport resilience.
North-East India

Bamboo, cane & lightweight craft

  • Bamboo structural/interior applications to be separately engineered
  • Cane furniture and screens
  • Basketry, matting and woven components
  • Regional bamboo processing knowledge
Vasundhara test: material grading, treatment knowledge, joint quality, moisture considerations and ability to work from an engineered detail.
Tamil Nadu · Karnataka · Kerala

Southern craft & fabrication pools

  • Stone carving and temple-related carving ecosystems
  • Wood carving and furniture
  • Bronze/metal craft
  • Cane, bamboo, natural fibre and boat/woodworking skills
Vasundhara test: match the artisan's traditional skill to contemporary architectural tolerances without erasing the underlying craft technique.
Himachal · Uttarakhand · J&K

Mountain timber & regional craft

  • Wood carving and joinery
  • Traditional timber-building knowledge to investigate
  • Willow and regional wood products
  • Stone and cold-climate construction skills
Vasundhara test: moisture, thermal, structural and transport considerations must be assessed alongside craft quality.
West Bengal · Assam · Sikkim

Wood, bamboo, fibre & textile-linked craft

  • Bamboo/cane
  • Wood craft
  • Natural fibre and woven components
  • Regional furniture and decorative work
Vasundhara test: prototype, material provenance, durability and ability to deliver a repeatable batch.
National industrial centres

Modern fabrication ecosystems

  • Joinery and cabinetmaking
  • Metal fabrication
  • Glass and glazing
  • Aluminium/uPVC fabrication
  • MEP and specialist equipment installation
Vasundhara test: shop drawings, machine/tool capability, QA system, sample approval, production capacity and installation warranty.
Important: Government handicrafts sources provide a useful discovery layer: the national artisan portal supports searches by state, district and craft, while government craft documentation identifies numerous regional craft ecosystems. These sources help us locate capability; they do not substitute for Vasundhara's own competence verification. Indian Handicrafts artisan database
03 · THE COMPETENCY LADDER

Mastery must be visible.

A future Vasundhara workforce record should distinguish between someone who has assisted a craft, someone who can independently execute it, and someone capable of leading a crew or solving difficult site conditions.

Level 01

Apprentice / helper

Understands tools, materials and basic process. Works under direct supervision. Evidence: attendance, supervised tasks and safety discipline.

Level 02

Skilled practitioner

Can independently execute defined work to an agreed standard. Evidence: practical test, samples, references and completed work.

Level 03

Senior / master

Handles complex details, repairs defects, interprets drawings or patterns and trains others. Evidence: difficult completed work and references.

Level 04

Lead / specialist

Can scope the work, estimate resources, organise a crew, coordinate with professionals and own the quality of a work package.

04 · WHAT WE WILL BUILD NEXT

From a directory into a live workforce intelligence system.

The next layer is a structured record for every capability: role code → material/process → region → cluster → competency level → evidence → crew capacity → tools → mobility → typical rate basis → lead time → project-stage fit → dependencies → quality test → current availability.

Individual craft dossiers

Detailed profiles for stone, lime, timber, bamboo, metal, earth, tile, plaster, paint, glass, textiles and specialist fabrication.

Project staffing matrix

Once a project is commissioned, automatically derive the human-resource bill of materials from project stage, scope, material and execution method.

SKILLED FORCE · NEXT LAYER

The objective is not a jobs board. It is the ability to find the right person for the exact work.

That is the standard this atlas will be built to.
